Urban Farm Assistant

This position is responsible for assisting the urban farm project coordinator with daily farm operations throughout our network of urban schoolyard farms, which produce a diverse range of biologically grown fruit and vegetables for direct consumer market as well as educational programs. This position reports directly to the urban farm project coordinator  and works in partnership with the executive director

Project Coordinator Roles and Tasks

Position Requirements:

  • Plant, harvest, and care for crops in greenhouse, hoop houses, and production fields
  • Assist with construction and maintenance of new greenhouses, hoop houses and other farm buildings and structures
  • Perform routine maintenance checks and make necessary repairs to farm structures, tools, irrigation systems
  • Follow standardized harvesting, processing, distribution and produce inventory management practices
  • Assist with farmstand operations
  • Maintain production and equipment records
  • Assist with guidance and supervision of ¬†workshare and community volunteer staff in the course of performing farm tasks (as mentioned above)
  • Strive to increase operational efficiency and effectiveness

Desirable skills and abilities

  • Ideal candidates will embrace a commitment to sustainable community food systems and inclusive communities
  • Individuals with at least 1 full year season of market and/or production farming or related experience are strongly preferred
  • Must follow established rules and regulations of public institutional community partners
  • Must be self-driven and able to effectively work independently
  • Must not have pending or previous convictions for violent crimes, crimes against children, or sexual assault of any manner. Must pass background checks for aforementioned convictions.
  • Must have willingness, ability, and experience working with, and ideally managing, unskilled and inexperienced staff and volunteers
  • Must be willing to work in wide range of weather including high temperature and humidity, cold, rain, and beautiful conditions
  • Comfortable and knowledgeable using web and mobile technology for the purpose of ¬†communication, record keeping, social media, problem solving, and research
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must have and use critical thinking, analytical, and creative problem solving skills

Employment duration and schedule

 

  • The urban farm assistant is a part-time position with opportunity for significant upward mobility and professional growth
  • Farm assistant must work 1-2 weekend days per month. Very rarely, holiday work may be required, depending on schedule of events and programs
  • A typical work week will will be between 15 and 25 hours, seasonally dependent
  • Staff typically works between the hours of 7am-6:30pm.

Starting salary

  • Farm assistant pay will range from $9.00-$11.00 per hour, directly commensurate with experience and willingness to learn and grow personally and professionally
